Studium am Centro de Estudios Cinematográficos in Mexiko-Stadt. Ab 1970 Assistentin des Fotografen Manuel Álvarez Bravo. Fotojournalismus und persönliche Arbeiten, z. B. über die Seri-Indianer in der Sonora-Wüste. Iturbide fotografiert meist in schwarzweiss, sie fokussiert auf den Alltag in Mexiko sowie auf den Alltag, die Riten und das Brauchtum indianischer Ethnien wie die Zapoteken und Mixteken. Spätere Fotoarbeiten entstanden in Indien, Madagascar, in Europa sowie in den USA. W.-Eugene-Smith-Preis für Humanistische Fotografie 1987; Guggenheim-stipendium 1998; Hasselblad-Preis 2008; Cornell-Capa-Prize
