John Vachon

Nach einem Universitätsabschluss kam Vachon 1936 aus Minnesota nach Washington, wo er Beamter bei der Farm Security Administration (FSA) wurde. Diese Behörde war 1935 während des New Deal von der Roosevelt-Regierung ins Leben gerufen worden mit dem Auftrag, die ländliche Armut zu bekämpfen. Als Vachon die Verwaltung des Fotoarchivs der FSA übernahm, begann er selber zu fotografieren. 1938-1942 gehörte er zum Fotografenteam der FSA. 1942/43 war Vachon Fotograf beim Office of War Information, 1943/44 bei Standard Oil, 1944/45 war er Soldat. Für die PR-Abteilung der Standard Oil Company lieferte er Bildberichte über die Ölförderung und die durch sie geschaffenen Arbeitsmöglichkeiten. Später arbeitete er als Fotojournalist für die Magazine Life (1947-1949) und Look (1947-1971). Anschliessend arbeitete Vachon als freischaffender Fotograf und unterrichtete am Minneapolis Institute of Arts.
